THE ELEMENTS OF GHOSTWRITING AND EDITING

Is there a book in your life? Or several? Have you thought about it? Talked about it? Made some notes? Even written it? Or maybe you’ve sat down to write it a hundred times, and now you have a hundred different pages, and you aren’t sure how to connect them.

We understand. We’ve been there ourselves. We want to help. But who are we? “We” are the editors and writers at Bear Press: Peter Heyrman, Linell Smith, Elizabeth Place, and Mike Barth.

We ghostwrite, edit and proof nonfiction and fiction of all kinds. You might get in touch with us when you need a fresh eye, or help in organizing your thoughts and material. You might come to us at the beginning of your project, when you haven’t written much of anything. As you start you might want a guide, or possibly even a ghostwriter. You might wait, and approach us when you have a complete draft that needs proofing, copyediting, and/or fact checking. We can do any and all of those things.
If you don’t have a single page written we will help you figure out how to start. If you’ve started then hit a dead end, we’ll look for ways to get your project moving again. If your manuscript is a mess, don’t be embarrassed. Almost all manuscripts start as embarrassing jumbles, and many stay that way through several drafts. We can help you straighten up the mess, making a muddle into your masterpiece (or at least an enjoyable read).

We have the patience that comes with experience, and we care about the work. We make our livings helping people communicate their ideas. When you talk to us about your book, we keep it confidential. We never ask for credit. Instead we do all we can to help you create the book that is all yours. Whether you come to us with an idea in an email, or a completed, well-organized draft, you are the author. You are the one who provides the primary idea. You are the one whose decisions guide the book. You are the one without whom it could never happen. Your name goes on it, and you are the only one who can claim the rights to it.

We are editors at Bear Press:

Peter Heyrman has written and published fiction, journalism and historical essays. He has edited almost everything: novels, memoirs, how-to books, and some popular science. His fiction has appeared in Twilight Zone Magazine, The New Black Mask, Playgirl, and many other books and periodicals.

Linell Smith had an illustrious career at The Baltimore Sun as a reporter and columnist, then began a new phase in freelance editing a couple of years ago. She has written everything from a children’s book to a cover story for the Washington Post Magazine. She edits all kinds of work.

Elizabeth Place has written for corporations and the government. She edited a magazine for The Seniors Network, and several online publications. She’s edited memoirs, fiction, and various nonfiction.

Mike Barth is the one among us who is indispensable to the project’s end. Just when all the work seems done, he brings that final touch: proofing and copyediting. He’s done this for countless books.

We have all worked on books, essays, and other writings in many different fields. We share our expertise, and team up with one another whenever a project calls for it. Our main concern is you and your work. We don’t promise miracles, but we do give you proven skills that will show off your work to its best advantage.

If you have a writing project, and feel you need help, give Pete a call at (410) 433 0908. The call is free, and we won’t charge anything until we’ve defined a job, settled on price and schedule, and you have agreed to it.
