Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communication, the Associate Director of Marketing & Communications will be responsible for managing, developing and implementing content plans that promote the College in support of our strategic plan and mission. The associate director (AD) will nurture and promote the Occidental College message through various communication channels with a primary focus on the College website, but also including social media properties, print collateral and other efforts. The associate director will implement strategies to promote faculty and student work and events both within and beyond the campus. Responsibilities primarily fall in three categories: 1. College website - content and strategy lead 2. Content producer/writer - for the website and other properties 3. Content management - lead a multi-channel editorial process within the team More specifically: * College Website - The AD will partner with Information Technology Services (ITS) in ownership of this important college asset. With ITS owning technical aspects of the site including development of functionality and features, the AD will focus on championing the content strategy for the site including messaging, frequency of updates and supporting rules of governance for various sections of the website. The AD will be responsible for planning and executing what content should be on the website, in particular, sections owned centrally by the College (eg the homepage) and providing strategic advice to other content owners to ensure their content aligns with their desired objectives. The AD will collaborate with ITS to provide recommendations and feedback on major web initiatives, including new product features, wireframes, designs, and user workflows. AD will provide web support for staff, faculty and students on content strategy best practices and the content management system via web office hours and other means. AD will also assist ITS with internal ticket requests. * Content Management & Strategy - The AD will help collect, develop and curate success stories from within the college (from faculty, students, and alumni) and determine how to best deploy this content across our marketing assets in order to meet the communication objectives of the College. This will include leading a multi-channel editorial process within the team, evaluating pitch ideas, assigning resources, determining timelines and managing content calendars. * Collateral Development - Responsibilities could include development of print and digital collateral beyond the website. The AD will work with the internal creative services team and with external resources where required, to develop high quality collateral to meet desired objectives and deadlines. * College & Departmental Strategy - The AD may act as a strategy advisor to assist academic departments and/or other parts of the College to develop effective messaging strategy to meet their respective communication goals. * Brand Champion - The AD will ensure consistency of the Oxy message, and in some cases visual identity, across digital and print collateral. They will work with campus departments and communication partners to advise on implementation of brand strategies and ensure compliance with brand standards. * Collaboration & Relationship Building - The AD will work collaboratively with faculty, staff, administrators and other campus groups to support their marketing needs and determine strategies to best leverage their success stories to support overall College marketing objectives. * Governance - The AD will be responsible for establishing and enforcing website rules of governance (ie who is responsible for creating/updating specific content) within the College. They will ensure that digital engagement standards and practices are understood and adopted across the College. The AD will also establish best practices and collaborate with those individuals managing digital engagement efforts in the various departments to adopt best practices. * Planning & Budgeting - The AD will develop short and long-term plans and budgets for communication programs and activities. They will also monitor progress, assure adherence and evaluate performance. * Other duties may be assigned., * The ideal candidate will have expertise and depth of understanding with respect to how a college website and its content serves the various audiences of the college. * Bachelor's degree required * 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications * Higher education marketing/communication experience strongly preferred * Experienced team leader * Proven track record in managing complexity and delivering results in a complex organization, * Excellent writing skills, with experience writing web content in a higher education environment, including items such as news stories and personal profiles * Experience managing and leading an editorial process including evaluating pitch ideas, assigning resources, determining timelines and developing content calendars * Familiar with website content management and basic functionality. Ability and experience understanding technical capabilities of the web in order to be proficient in recommending and implementing various content types (eg graphics, video, blogs, social media etc.) * Experience and comfortable at effectively utilizing digital assets (web, social media, video) and developing respective content * Thorough knowledge of project management, which includes the ability to define and delegate roles and tasks. * Experience in evaluating, hiring, and managing outside agencies and/or freelance creative resources. * A self-starter who prides her/himself on his/her ability to take the initiative and has an entrepreneurial spirit. * Strong interpersonal and communication skills and good judgment in identifying issues and recommending solutions to others. * Ability to lead teams and work collaboratively across organizational lines. * Must be able to establish, maintain and nurture strong relationships across the College. * Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. * The ability to view organizations holistically and prioritize activities accordingly for the highest impact., * Bachelor's degree required * 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in marketing and communications * Higher education marketing/communication experience strongly preferred * Experienced team leader * Proven track record in managing complexity and delivering results in a complex organization Marketing/Communication Functional Skills: * The ideal candidate will have expertise and depth of understanding with respect to how a college website and its content serves the various audiences of the college. * Excellent writing skills, with experience writing web content in a higher education environment, including items such as news stories and personal profiles * Experience managing and leading an editorial process including evaluating pitch ideas, assigning resources, determining timelines and developing content calendars * Familiar with website content management and basic functionality.
