Special Education/Early Intervention Attorney
The Alliance for Childrens Rights is seeking a dedicated Education Program Attorney to work in the Saltz Family Early Intervention Advocacy Center at the Alliance. The attorney will assist children ages 0 : 5 living in out:of:home care to secure early intervention and special education services through the regional centers and school districts. The Alliance is a nonprofit legal services organization devoted to protecting the rights of abused and impoverished children in Los Angeles County. Established in 1992, the organization is well:known and well:respected, and has served more than 100,000 children. The Education Program Attorney position is a wonderful opportunity for a well:qualified candidate to secure the benefits and services that these young children need to succeed in school and in life.
Responsibilities include:
xF0B7; Represent clients in regional centers and school district meetings including IFSPs/IEPs, informal dispute resolution, mediations, due process administrative hearings.
xF0B7; Train and supervise pro bono attorneys, interns and law clerks.
xF0B7; Develop and update special education/early intervention materials for clients and the community; conduct community outreach and trainings.
xF0B7; Coordinate services with social workers, childrens attorneys and the juvenile court to ensure appropriate early intervention services for children in foster care.
xF0B7; Represent the Alliance at early education related policy meetings; identify trends and advocate to change/implement policies to improve early intervention services.
xF0B7; Perform additional administrative duties, including data entry and filing.
xF0B7; CA bar admission.
xF0B7; Experience in regional center/school district special education advocacy, foster care, Dependency Court and/or child welfare system strongly preferred.
xF0B7; Excellent written and oral communication skills.
xF0B7; Strong interpersonal skills : ability to communicate effectively with clients, attorneys, child welfare agencies, the judiciary and the public.
xF0B7; Excellent organizational skills.
xF0B7; Desire to help others.
xF0B7; Bilingual (Spanish) highly preferable.
The applicant must have the ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast:paced environment. Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include generous health, dental, and life insurance plans, as well as vacation and sick leave policies
