Perhaps amongst the most valuable skills a person can have in life--is the ability to manage his or her emotions. If we suffer from frequent episodes of ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, ANGER and other difficulties, we can learn skills that will allow us to take control of these emotional states and improve our lives dramatically.

RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL has been offering its self-help program since 1937 and people claim over and over again--that it works and that practicing the method brings about profound changes in one's life.

Using RI’s very down-to-earth four step method and its great body of wisdom, RI practitioners learn to integrate good mental health practices into their daily lives. Through self-observation, we gain insight into our own thinking habits and automatic responses to our various life events. We then notice the connections between our automatic thinking and the emotional distress that we experience. Using our own personal insights, and equipped with the method and commonsense guidelines—we find that we are no longer helpless victims but are able to work through undesirable states of mind or better yet, learn to avoid them in the first place.


The Thought Pathways to Anxiety, Depression and Anger We have thousands and thousands of automatic thoughts every day and hopefully most of them are useful in keeping us safe, keeping us alert, allowing us to function in the world. But If we suffering from an over reactive nervous system that results in on-going anxiety, depressive moods, and frequent anger outbursts, we most likely have some thought habits that are not serving us, but in fact are sabotaging our wellbeing.

What are the Thoughts That Trigger Emotional Distress? Using The Recovery International method, we train ourselves to be good self observers. We learn to notice the first stirrings of emotional distress—the various body sensations—perhaps a knot in the stomach or sensations in the chest area, heart palpitations, tension in our arms, shallow breathing, etc. and accompanying this are our emotional feelings. So we ask ourselves what have we been thinking and what circumstances have stirred these thoughts and feelings.

Mindfulness, Self-Awareness and Changing Our Self-Talk The RI Method allows us the ability to be more mindful in our daily encounters. Practicing the method, we become conscious, more alert to our habitual thought and behavioral patterns that we know have lead to emotional distress and undesirable behaviors in the past. Using the Method and equipped with cognitive tools, we learn there are many ways to view our situations and there are many possible responses as well. This new flexibility allows better choices that keep us calmer and more resourceful problem solvers.

Changing Our Nervous Systems – Changing our Brains and Synaptic Wiring If we are suffering from anxiety, depression or anger on a regular basis, we need to retrain our nervous systems. We can learn to be less reactive, stop making mountains out of molehills, stop interpreting situations as dangerous when they are not. By self-observation we gain insights to our sensitivities and irrational beliefs and can reframe our experiences in a more rational way.

Before and After Brain Scans and MRIs Today we know that our thoughts are linked to our physical and emotional responses by the synaptic connections between our neurons. When we deliberately practice substituting constructive thinking each time we find ourselves in our old counter-productive thinking mode, we are gradually disconnecting the undesirable synaptic connections that bring on those very distressing physical and emotional response. We are retraining ourselves and reprogramming our nervous systems to become less reactive to the situations that use to stir us up and generally we find ourselves becoming calmer and feeling a lot better. After a while, with consistent practice, we find that we just don’t get worked up by things that use to upset us.

And today we concrete evidence that this self-improvement is also accompanied by physical changes in the brain. We are not only feeling better and functioning better, but actually changing our brains.

Before and After – How Practicing the RI Method Changes Your Life The RI Method works. We have over a hundred thousand testimonials to support this.
