Even though RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL, is the oldest self help organization in the world--going back to 1937--it uses and has been using for seventy-five years now, basic cognitive behavioral principles that are recognized today as one of the most effective means of personal change and improving one's emotional well-being.

Going back to the 1930s, people suffering from ANXIETY, PANIC ATTACKS, DEPRESSION, ANGER PROBLEMS, OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE BEHAVIOR, IMPULSE CONTROL PROBLEMS and other emotional and dysfunctional distress had little reason to hope that they might overcome these conditions. The therapies employed at the time had very low success rates. There was an exception, however, people trained in using the Recovery, Inc. (now Recovery International) method were actually making remarkable progress in overcoming their mental afflictions and were making dramatic improvements in their lives and their emotional well-being.

Using the RI Method, we are equipped with a large collection of cognitive-behavioral guidelines that we can employ as needed when we find ourselves challenged by a situation or by some unwelcome feelings. Using these RI tools, we learn to recognized when our thoughts are moving us into an undesirable direction. We learn that even though we might have strong engrained habits to think and behave in certain ways, we can stop ourselves and choose other alternatives. We can choose more constructive perspectives and behaviors that will help us stay calm, promote clarity and the ability to handle our situations more effectively.

Today we know that our thoughts are synaptically linked to our physical and emotional responses. When we deliberately practice substituting constructive thinking each time we find ourselves in our old counter-productive thinking mode, we are gradually disconnecting the synaptic wiring that bring on those very distressing physical and emotional responses. We are retraining our nervous systems to become less reactive to the situations that use to stir us up and generally find ourselves becoming calmer and feeling a lot better.

And today we have concrete evidence that this self-improvement is also accompanied by physical changes in the brain. “Before and after” brain scans and MRIs show that cognitive behavioral training result in structural changes in the brain. We are not only feeling better and functioning better, but we are actually changing our brains.

Ann Landers speaking of Recovery, Inc. (now RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL, “Their record of success is phenomenal.”

A $5.00 OR MORE DONATION IS SUGGESTED BUT NOT REQUIRED.
People are welcome to drop in at any selected RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL, meeting and just observe. It is not an ongoing class but a practice session—learning and practicing the RI Method. People are invited to attend at their own convenience. When individuals feel the need to get the self-help guidance, support and structure of an RI Meeting, it is out there for them with no further obligation.

RECOVERY INTERNATIONAL, is a non-profit organization founded in 1937, with approximately 500 peer-run weekly meetings taking place throughout the world. There are numerous meetings taking place throughout the greater Los Angeles area. CANNOT FIND A CONVENIENT MEETING? – WE HAVE ALTERNATIVES:

The Abraham Low Self Help Systems web site www.lowselfhelpsystems.org. lists the numerous Recovery International meetings taking place in the Southern California area—including additional meetings to those listed above. To find other meeting possibilities, go to the web site home page, click “Meetings” at the top, and then click the “Click Here” link and then input your zip code to find a convenient meeting. But if you cannot find a convenient meeting, we offer alternatives to our regular meetings. On the web site you will find forums, chat rooms, online meetings and information about telephone meetings. All of this is free but the telephone meetings are not toll-free. We recommend a 99 Cent Store telephone card – “99 minutes for 99 cents,” which will allow you to participate at a minimum cost. (The meetings last one hour.) To find a meeting, click “Meetings” at the top of the Home Page and then on the Meetings page, find the appropriate type of meeting listed on the left side of the page.
