The City of Pasadena is seekingtofillthe position of Building Inspection Supervisor. The Building Inspection Supervisorsupervises Building and Housing Inspectors responsible for day to day inspection operations; administers the building and housing inspection programs and provides technical code requirements relating to inspections.


The ideal candidate is a technical expert who possesses the ability to effectively solve problems and lead a team with a positive, customer focused mind-set.

Essential Functions

1.Performs supervisory duties to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; and, making hiring, termination and disciplinary recommendations and any other recommendations related to the change in status of employees.

2.Undertakes the customer service and public relations functions which includes: Interpreting housing and building related code conflicts; providing technical support and departmental information to staff, the public, other City departments, and outside agencies; participating in the development of outreach materials; investigating complaints; representing the City and department in external forums; and, giving presentations to a variety of groups.

3.Participates in researching, developing, implementing, and evaluating new division processes and procedures.

4.Prepares building inspection plans; negotiates and monitors building contractors' activities within prescribed guidelines.

5.Perform regular inspections on unique, complex or difficult projects. Investigates complaints and follows up.

* Associate of Arts/Science degree in Building Construction Inspection, 30 college units in engineering, architecture, or building inspection is desirable.

* Five (5) years' experience performing inspections with a public agency, at least two (2) years of the required experience must include programs related to building and housing inspections and leading and coordinate the work of others.


The selection process will consist of a training and experience evaluation, interview panel, department-level interviews, and possible an online assessment.


There is currently one vacancy in the Planning and Community Development Department.

The probationary work period is one year. This position is apart of the PMA bargaining unit.

Special Requirements

* Certification(s) by the International Code Council (ICC) as a Combo Building Inspector in all major disciplines(Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing) is required. You mustlist each certificate in the certificate section of your application.

* Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.
