Museum Background

Envisioned as a revolutionary museum and the first of its kind, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will explore a wide variety of visual storytelling, including painting, photography, illustration, film, animation and digital art. The unprecedented breadth of the Lucas Museum collection will provide opportunities to present an expansive and open definition of art, acknowledging that all visual art forms can make a meaningful connection with viewers.

At the Lucas Museum, narrative art refers to works in many mediums that focus on visual storytelling through compositions of recognizable images and convey an emotionally powerful story or meaning to broad audiences. The Museum's focus is to explore art through anthropology, cultural studies, and the evolving landscape of narrative mediums across time.

The Museum's initial collection holdings-a seed gift from collector and the Museum's founder, George Lucas, and recent acquisitions by the Lucas Museum-are actively expanding. To date, the collection includes Golden Age painted illustrations by artists such as Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, and N.C. Wyeth, as well as a broad range of children's art, comic art, photography from diverse periods and cultures.

The Museum will also explore all facets of cinematic art and its design processes, with a rich archive of concept art, storyboards, set design, props, costume and fashion, animation, and visual effects.

Digital technologies underpin many of the Museum more recent holdings, including those from digital cinema and animation, and digital illustration.

Education Initiatives

The Lucas Museum's innovative and accessible approach to collecting art will be at the core of all education initiatives. The Museum's goal is to create an interactive experience for visitors that bridges the power of visual storytelling across time and place.

Leadership

Don Bacigalupi is the Founding President of the museum and responsible for building and leading the team. Dr. Bacigalupi has more than 20 years of leadership experience at some of the world's most renowned institutions. Most recently, Bacigalupi served as the Founding President and Executive Director of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

Judy Kim serves as the Deputy Director. Ms. Kim was previously Director of Affiliates and Abu Dhabi Project Operations for the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Prior to that, Ms. Kim was at the Brooklyn Museum, where she served first as Managing Curator of Exhibitions, and later as Head of the Exhibitions Division, responsible for overseeing all permanent collections as well as temporary exhibitions.

The Museum's Board of Directors is headed by its founders, George Lucas and Mellody Hobson. Its members are business and institutional leaders as well as cultural icons, to include Henry Bienen, Arne Duncan, John Lasseter, John McCarter, Jr., and Andrea Wishom.

Scope

The estimated operating budget for the Museum's inaugural years is estimated to be approximately $45-50 million. Annual attendance is expected to be at least 1,000,000 guests, including local, regional and national visitors, as well as interested cultural tourists from around the world. The anticipated opening of the Museum is 2021.

Setting

Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is to be built in south Los Angeles' Exposition Park. The cutting-edge facility is designed by award-winning architect Ma Yansong of Beijing-based MAD Architects, with a surrounding 11-acre landscape designed by Mia Lehrer & Associates. The Museum will comprise approximately 300,000 square feet of purpose-built interior space, including nearly 100,000 square feet of gallery spaces, two state-of-the-art cinematic theaters, a fully outfitted education center, library, two restaurants, event space and a rooftop terrace. The Museum will be positioned within the newly designed and planted greenspace, with extensive parking facilities underground.

Key Responsibilities

Working in dialogue with the Lucas Museum's President and Deputy Director, the Director of Curatorial Strategies will employ creative vision and innovation to provide programmatic and administrative leadership to collections, archives, exhibitions, and public programs. The Director will share responsibility for the scope and vision of the Museum as well as expanding the Museum's collections via new acquisitions.

Key elements of the role include the following:

Developing the Role and Image of the Museum

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art aims to position itself among a complex constellation of museums and other educational and cultural institutions while it develops its capacity to serve as a local, national, and international destination. The Director of Curatorial Strategies will work with the President and a core leadership team to infuse the Museum with vision, energy, and excitement and with a clear and strong curatorial perspective, integrating all forms of narrative art.

New Facility and Exhibition and Program Planning

The Director of Curatorial Strategies will develop plans for gallery layout and inaugural installation schemes. This process will include collaborating with the Founder, the President, and the Deputy Director, as well as interfacing with architectural design team, interior/gallery designers and others.

During the construction of the new Museum, the Director of Curatorial Strategies will explore and develop collaborative plans with partner institutions-cultural and educational-to present pilot exhibitions and programs intended to preview the Museum's offerings in several venues.

Strategically Developing the Collection

Along with the Founder and the President, the Director of Curatorial Strategies will develop and refine plans for augmenting the inaugural collection in thoughtful and strategic ways. This will include identifying and recommending acquisitions through purchase, as well as building relationships that may result in collaborations, loans, and gifts to the Museum.

Specific responsibilities pre- and post-opening include the following:

Pre-Opening


Develop pilot programs with local institutional partners.

Conceive opening collection presentation and exhibition plan.

Survey and assess existing art collection; articulate a strategic collection development plan.

Outline curatorial staffing priorities, recruit and hire the curatorial team.

Shape and develop a diverse, innovative, and academically rigorous exhibition program.


Post-Opening


Work cross-departmentally to provide input as needed regarding acquisitions, exhibitions, and programs.

Cultivate relationships with donors, professional colleagues, partner organizations, and the community at large in furtherance of the Museum's strategic goals.

Responsibly manage the museum's collection, ensuring proper documentation, maintenance, display, and conservation.

Conduct and support research and publication of the collection.

Work in close collaboration with the President, Deputy Director and other departments on planning and goal setting to ensure department goals support strategic plan.



Oversee strategic growth and management of the permanent collection and work closely with collectors, dealers, and prospective donors to locate, research, and recommend works of art to the President and Deputy Director to enhance the collection.

Manage touring exhibitions.

Develop and maintain the Museum's regional, national and international professional networks.

Collaborate with museum educators to plan and implement progressive programs for schools and teachers, children and families, and adults.

Oversee all administrative, financial and personnel matters of the exhibitions and collections departments.

Work with the President and museum staff to cultivate Founders, trustees, collectors, donors, and artists.

Provide programs and stewardship for any support groups and selected major donors and participate in cultivation events.

Work in a collegial and collaborative manner with peers in film, education, development, finance, marketing, public relations, and visitor services.

Cultivate strong ties with the local community, collectors, educators, city and county officials, and affinity groups.


Professional Experience/Qualifications

The successful candidate must be a visionary, strategic, high-energy leader who is collaborative, diplomatic, and inspires confidence. S/he must possess a minimum of 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience in museum environments, with demonstrated curatorial management experience, and proven experience in developing and leading teams, exhibitions, programs, budgets, and projects.

The successful candidate should possess the following:


Experience working in a start-up environment and entrepreneurial drive; the role will require an ability to roll up one's sleeve to accomplish initiatives, as well as strategic and big-picture thinking. Additionally, an awareness that the position will evolve as the Museum takes shape and form is essential.

A strong record of research and scholarship, with proven experience organizing exhibitions and producing publications of high quality.

Demonstrated skill at strategically building a collection through gift and purchase.

Strong budget, exhibitions, programs, and strategic planning experience and demonstrated skills in those areas.

Ability to effectively lead cross-functional teams with proven skills in working effectively and positively across functional areas within an organization.

Excellent planning, organizational, and project management skills.

Excellent and effective written and verbal communication skills.

The ability to be a team player with proven ability to work effectively and positively with staff, leadership, and all other internal and external contacts.

The ability to build positive and effective relationships with donors and the broader community.

Proven experience supervising staff with strong department management skills.

Comfort with ambiguity, an ability to envision the new and different, and a commitment to developing and working with diverse audiences is a must.

The ideal candidate is innovative, creative, and inspiring, with the ability to serve as an advocate for the Museum and its collections, exhibitions, and programs, and thus advance the mission and reputation of the Museum and build audiences locally and globally.


Additionally, prospective candidate must be proactive and results-oriented and at the same time collaborative and diplomatic. The successful candidate will thrive working in this demanding yet rewarding position in support of this ground-breaking museum.

Education

A graduate degree in art history, curatorial studies, or a related field is required.
